A brief trip to Vancouver Island for flowers and tea has sparked my interest in mapping different types of gardens – and similar public spaces if time allows. I'm presently imagining a series of six square maps, likely in a style similar to Narcisse Vergnaud's L'Art de Créer les Jardins; although that topographic shading will be very difficult to replicate. I'd like to map well-known gardens of different origins, namely (1) the Gardens of Versailles, (2) the Gardens at Villa d'Este, (3) the Gardens of Generalife, (4) Master of the Nets Garden, (5) Ryoan-ji , and (6) the Garden at the Taj Mahal. Clearly, there are beautiful maps of all of these gardens, but why not try my hand at it? Someone has to practice such designs as we move towards landscape maps of this style. I hope to be finished this series by the beginning of spring, so check back for details!
Also Victoria is lovely, and everyone should visit. Take the ferry from Anacortes to Sidney, so you can pass through the San Jaun Islands. I've included two pictures from Butchart Gardens below; I added the rest to Flickr.
